Model No. 6-A Tru-Bal™ RIFLEMAN Throwing Knife by Harry K. McEvoy

Tru-Bal Model No. 6-A Rifleman

An old Tru-Bal catalog identifies this model as the original design for the RIFLEMAN. It was only made from 1975-1976 before it was revised in 1977 in the form of a model #6-B. Here is the description of the< Model No. 6-A RIFLEMAN from that old catalog:

VIDEO REVIEW: Knife and Tomahawk Throwing for Backyard Recreation by Harry K. McEvoy and Michael S. Lambert (VHS)

In his video, Knife and Tomahawk Throwing Harry McEvoy gives a very nice overview of the backyard sport of knife throwing. It was great to get to see him in his later years talking about the subject he loves, reminding me that he made me love knife throwing too.

An Old Tru-Balance Knife Company Catalog

I received these images of an old Tru-Balance Knife Company catalog that I’d never seen before. It turns out that they come from Bobby Branton, a longtime friend and student of Harry K. McEvoy.

The hand-writing looks like Harry’s (but so does Stephen’s a little) so I think it was before 1993. But I know it was after 1984 obviously by the dates written on it.

This is a great resource because it gives dates that certain models were in production.

Model No. 70 Tru-Bal™ Classic PRO-THROW Knife by Stephen D. McEvoy

Is this the most copied throwing knife in the world?

Probably.

Harry E. McEvoy’s original design has been duplicated by knife makers all over the world. And the knife itself has been in use for nearly 40 years straight.

And yet in spite of its popularity, Harry’s son Stephen McEvoy decided he could make it even better. And that’s exactly what he did.

In this newly revised version, The Tru-Bal Classic Pro-Throw has a slightly thinner blade and smooth lines.

Perfectly balanced, this knife can be hurled equally well by the handle or the blade. Accurate throws are this knife’s specialty.

The Classic Pro-Throw is handcrafted of super-tough tempered spring steel. Jet black vulcanized fiber handle slabs with heavy rivets complete the ensemble.

It is 13 1/2″ overall, 2″ wide, 3/16″ thick and weighs 15 ounces.

Sturdy leather sheath and throwing instructions included.

This knife is brand new from the factory. It is handmade by Stephen D. McEvoy, son of the founder of the Tru-Balance Knife Company, Harry K. McEvoy.

Tru-Bal gets a lot of requests for their old Model No. 1, which they no longer make and Stephen told me he doesn’t understand why because the Model No. 70 is a superior knife that throws better than the old Model No. 1.

Model No. 79 Tru-Bal™ SPORT-PRO Throwing Knife Set of 3 by Harry K. McEvoy

These are my personal throwers in a leather sheath I made myself. It holds three Tru-Bal model 79 but I lost one of them in the underbrush.

In the video I think I said there are 9 layers of leather in this sheath. Actually there are “only” 7…but my hands still really did hurt sewing them all together!

These knives were hand-made by Harry K. McEvoy, founder of the Tru-Balance Knife Company. I bought them from him in the early 1980’s.

Catalog Description (from when I bought it in the early 1980’s) :

The new Heavyweight Tru-Bal SPORT-PRO is designed for throwing in the professional style. It combines all the best features of throwing knives used by the world’s greatest professional knife throwers. It is hurled equally well by handle OR blade for amazing accuracy — after a bit of practice — and with maximum penetration and control. The super-tough tempered spring steel from which the knife is crafted will stand up to a lifetime of rugged use. The SPORT-PRO heavyweight thrower is 13 1/2″ overall, 2 1/2″ wide and 5/32″ think. It weighs 15 ounces and is the perfect length, weight and balance for professional performance. Sheaths are not available for this model.
