    Ken,
I have an original Harry McCavoy knife & sheath that you call the Model No.1, but with the hole in the middle. It shows up in the old McCavoy book “Knife Throwing A Practical Guide” fig. 2, pg. 19, the cover & crossed on the old AKTA emblem. What can you tell me about these knives? Were they sold as a production item at the time? What was the hole for; to make a sound when thrown for hunting, for balance, or just because it looks neat? I have to admit that this knife is the best single revolution throwing knife I’ve ever picked up & I have several good ones. So, if you can give me any information or old catalogue copy about this knife I would I would love it.
Now just a note about the Stephen McCavoy knives, I initially got one to see what they looked like, they are excellant copies, (I’ve gotten several since, very nice). This gives the knife thrower an opportunity to get thier hands on one of these McCavoys at a more affordable price than an original & to get one of the harder to come by shapes at all. I wish yall had done this ten years ago.
Harry McCavoy designed the Stradivarius’ of thowing knives.
Best of luck with the club,
    Mike

    Mike,

I know what you are talking about with the hole. I’ve seen several models that had that hole. I’ll do some more research for you because I’m not quite sure myself. When I was buying and selling them in 1983 and 1984 they did not have holes. I think that might be just so it is easy to hang them on a nail…but that is just a guess at this point. I hope I can find out for sure. The old catalogs I have do not show that hole but the pictures Harry put in his books often did. So we’ll see about that.

If anyone out there already knows the answer…please make a comment on this post. In the meantime I’ll try to get in touch with Stephen and ask him … I’m sure he knows but it will be a couple of weeks probably before I find out from him.

(ALSO… If anyone DOES have some old Tru-Balance Throwing Knife catalogs … or knives … that you want to part with let me know…I am interested in obtaining anything at all that relates to the Tru-Balance Knife Company or the Tru-Bal Throwing Knives.)

Stephen D. McEvoy is Harry’s son who took over the Tru-Balance Knife company, so in my opinion they are not just copies but a continuation of a tradition. He dropped some models…actually Harry dropped a lot of models himself even in the 1980′s…and Stephen has added some pretty cool new ones. I really like his handle innovation on the STINGER and MOUNTAIN bowies.

I agree with your assessment that Tru-Bal knives are the “Stradivarius” of throwing knives. Well put!

    Ken
