The Tru Bal Model No.9 Champion came along after I stopped selling Tru-Bal knives the first time. So to fill in the gap in my collection I purchased this knife from a collector in 2011. He had purchased it from Bobby Branton earlier when he sold out his Tru-Bal collection.
Description from an old Tru-Bal catalog:
All-purpose in concept. Tru-Bal Model No. 9 CHAMPION is primarily made for throwing by either handle OR blade. It is also an excellent hunting, camping, survival and combat knife and is handcrafted — after being shaped by laser — of tough specially tempered spring steel for maximum shock resistance. Handle slabs are of durable vulcanized fibre, heavily riveted on to the extended tang. It is 13 1/2″ overall, 2″ wide, 5/16″ thick and weighs 13 1/2 ounces. Strong leather sheath and instruction sheet included.
I’m not sure about throwing this one by the blade. It is sharp!
According to Stephen McEvoy this knife was in production for only a short amount of time from 1984 to 1987. He does not know the exact number but he doubts that there are more than a few dozen of these out there.
Here is a picture that Bobby Branton took of this knife when he was selling his collection…it is the second from the right…
(BTW, I also bought the stag handled knife from David Jester that is the third from the right and it is in my collection!)
