In 1983 I received the new Tru-Bal catalog but unfortunately by that time I had started to move on to other things and so I was not able to purchase this model or the new Model No. 83 SUPER-PRO (same knife, no handles) that came out that year. So to fill in the gap in my collection I purchased this knife from a collector in 2011. He had purchased it from Bobby Branton earlier when he sold out his Tru-Bal collection. In Bobby’s old Tru-Bal catalog pages it says this was made from 1983 to 1988.
Here is the description of the Model No. 8 Pro-Master from my 1983-1984 Tru-Bal catalog:
This knife also combines the best features of throwing knives designed and used by the world’s greatest professional knife throwers into a new and truly perfect professional throwing knife. It is designed and balanced to be hurled by handle OR blade for uncanny accuracy in the professional style of throwing, and for maximum penetration and control. Handcrafted of super-tough, specially tempered spring steel and polished to a mirror-like finish, it will stand up to a lifetime of rugged use. The Tru-Balance Model 8 has a full seven year unconditional guarantee against blade breakage. Complete throwing instructions are included with every order. Strong handmade leather sheath. Overall length is 13 1/2″; width 2″ and thickness 3/16″. Knife weight 16 oz.
Notice the 7 year unconditional guarantee? I think prior to this it was a lifetime guarantee. But in 1982 one of my customers somehow managed to break a couple of the knives they bought from me and I sent them in to Harry for replacement. He honored his word of course, but I still have his angry letter telling me there was no way anyone could break one of his knives from normal throwing. He thought they were up to no good doing things they shouldn’t have with them. I’ll post that letter some day!
Here is a picture that Bobby Branton took of his collection when he was selling it…I believe this knife is either the fourth or fifth knife from the left…probably fourth…
(BTW, I also bought the two knives on the right directly from Bobby when he gave me an early shot at purchasing his collection and those are now in my collection too!)
And here is another one from Bobby of the Model No. 8 PRO-MASTER…though this may not be the one I own…
